Notably, she allegedly refused\u003cbr\u003e\nthe Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Indian equivalent of a lifetime Oscar, in\u003cbr\u003e\n2005, preferring to live in seclusion out of the public eye. She was born as\u003cbr\u003e\nRoma Dasgupta in Pabna district in Bangladesh 1931. She married Dibanath Sen,\u003cbr\u003e\nson of a wealthy Bengali industrialist, in 1947 and had one child, Moonmoon\u003cbr\u003e\nSen, who went on to become an actress. Her daughter Moonmoon Sen also acted in\u003cbr\u003e\na few films in Hindi and Bengali. Moonmoon Sen's daughters Riya and Raima are\u003cbr\u003e\nalso actresses. Her father Karunamoy Dasgupta was the head master of the local\u003cbr\u003e\nschool and her mother's name was Indira Dasgupta. She was their fifth child\u003cbr\u003e\nand third daughter. She had formal education in Pabna. Suchitra made her debut\u003cbr\u003e\nin films with Shesh Kothai in 1952, but the film went unreleased. The\u003cbr\u003e\nfollowing year saw her act opposite Uttam Kumar in Sharey Chuattor. The film\u003cbr\u003e\nbecame a box-office hit and it was remembered for launching Uttam-Suchitra as\u003cbr\u003e\na leading pair. They went on to become the icons for Bengali melodramas for\u003cbr\u003e\nmore than 20 years, becoming almost a genre to themselves. She received a Best\u003cbr\u003e\nActress Award for the film Devdas, 1955 which was her first Hindi movie. Her\u003cbr\u003e\npatented Bengali melodramas and romances especially with Uttam Kumar, made her\u003cbr\u003e\nthe most famous Bengali actress ever.
