He is the beloved of the\u003cbr\u003e\nlocal people, among whom we have Chhipli, Vyjayanthimala, her young brother\u003cbr\u003e\nShibu\/Faltu, Jagadamba, Kumli-didi, Naani, Ajablal, Ali his driver, Amal,\u003cbr\u003e\nNutubabu and a host of others. He is so much taken up with them that he\u003cbr\u003e\ninevitably comes in conflict with the likes of Laxman Lal, Ajitesh\u003cbr\u003e\nBandyopadhyay, a tyrannical son of a very dominant local aristocrat. Laxman\u003cbr\u003e\nLal lusts after Chhipli, a widow and a happy go lucky tribal girl, who seeks\u003cbr\u003e\nshelter with Dr. Mukherjee. As Dr. Mukherjee retires and starts treating the\u003cbr\u003e\npoor he becomes even more entwined with their lives and their little problems.\u003cbr\u003e\nTo the tribals he is a god-like figure, but the likes of Laxman Lal become\u003cbr\u003e\nless restrained, as Dr. Mukherjee no longer represents officialdom.\u003cbr\u003e\nUltimately. Laxman Lal tricks Chhipli and tries to rape her. Dr. Mukherjee\u003cbr\u003e\nintervenes and strangles Laxman Lal, but is mortally wounded himself. Review\u003cbr\u003e\nThis is one of the rare Bengali Film by Ashoke Kumar and Vyhayanthimala. The\u003cbr\u003e\nstory is based on a novel by Banaphool and very well presented by Tapan Sinha.\u003cbr\u003e\nWe have superb rabindrasangeet Ogo Nadi Apan Bege in this movie by Hemanta\u003cbr\u003e\nMukherjee. We even have a song by Vyjayanthimala herself! A great and classic\u003cbr\u003e\nmovie to watch again and again. --\u003cbr\u003e\nbazarey-1967-ashoke-kumar-vyjayanthimala-bangla-movie\/ The first thing that\u003cbr\u003e\ncomes to mind in Hatey Bazarey is the superb acting by the two main\u003cbr\u003e\nprotagonists Ashok Kumar as Dr. Mukherjee and Ajitesh Bandyopadhyay as Laxman\u003cbr\u003e\nLal. Both are one dimensional characters. Dr. Mukherjee is all good and Laxman\u003cbr\u003e\nLal is all bad, yet such is the power of the acting that both characters\u003cbr\u003e\nbecome believable and human. 40 years after it was first screened, I still can\u003cbr\u003e\nempathise with Dr. Mukherjee and hate Laxman Lal. Equally charming as a blithe\u003cbr\u003e\nspirit is Vyjayanthimala as Chhipli. These three carry the film. All other\u003cbr\u003e\ncharacters are there to add to the flavour and do that perfectly, but it is\u003cbr\u003e\nthese three that you remember. Tapan Sinha has always been a master\u003cbr\u003e\nstoryteller and in Hatey Bazarey, he excels himself. This is a film in which\u003cbr\u003e\nyou realise the importance of screenplay and restraint in direction. It is one\u003cbr\u003e\nof the most brilliant screenplays I have seen in Bengali films. Since the\u003cbr\u003e\nstory revolves around the conflict of good and evil, there was ample scope for\u003cbr\u003e\ndrama, yet with brilliant restraint, Sinha makes every scene count, and never\u003cbr\u003e\nallows himself the luxury of exaggeration. Take for example the initial scene\u003cbr\u003e\nwhich depicts a rape, involving Laxman Lal. There is no violence. Instead with\u003cbr\u003e\na combination of deft camera angles, light and shade and a strikingly low key\u003cbr\u003e\nsoundtrack, Sinha depicts the terror of the young girl running for her life\u003cbr\u003e\nand the horror of the scene so compellingly that it sets the mood for the rest\u003cbr\u003e\nof the film. This film is a superb example of Tapan Sinha's mastery over the\u003cbr\u003e\ntechnical aspects of filmmaking. Music direction is outstanding. I have always\u003cbr\u003e\nloved Tapan Sinha's use of Rabindrasangeet and this film does not disappoint.\u003cbr\u003e\nEqually delightful is the tune to which Vyjayanthimala lends her voice - I had\u003cbr\u003e\nforgotten how well she could sing - and the song accompanying the tribal\u003cbr\u003e\ndance. Editing by Subodh Ray is excellent as is the cinematography by the\u003cbr\u003e\nlegendary Dinen Gupta. Hatey Bazarey is not a complex psychological film. It\u003cbr\u003e\nis rather uni-dimensional. The good is godlike and the evil satanic and the\u003cbr\u003e\ntwo meet only in conflict. Instead it is a story that is beautifully told.
