They would rather party than be patriots.In the film both\u003cbr\u003e\nthe 1930s British India and the India Today run parallel and intersect with\u003cbr\u003e\neach other at crucial points. As the film reaches its resolution the line\u003cbr\u003e\nbetween past and present blurs, as they become one in spirit.The film changed\u003cbr\u003e\nthe face of how youth looks at their rights, their duties and what rebel means\u003cbr\u003e\nto them! Review Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra merges two plots in RANG DE\u003cbr\u003e\nBASANTI. The first is about a group of friends, their bonding, the carefree\u003cbr\u003e\nlifestyle they lead. The second plot pertains to the past, when freedom\u003cbr\u003e\nfighters sacrificed their lives during the pre-independence era. Without\u003cbr\u003e\ndoubt, Mehra's intentions are noble, since portions in the film do succeed in\u003cbr\u003e\npricking your conscience.Mehra draws parallels between Indians ruled by the\u003cbr\u003e\nBritish and Indians ruled by corrupt politicians today. The message is subtle\u003cbr\u003e\nat first, but echoes piercingly before it reaches its finale. The transition\u003cbr\u003e\nof the five friends from meaningless to meaningful existence is done\u003cbr\u003e\nbrilliantly.You expect Aamir Khan to deliver yet another astounding\u003cbr\u003e\nperformance in RANG DE BASANTI and he does, but it's not Aamir alone that you\u003cbr\u003e\napplaud in the film. Of course, Aamir gets into the skin of the character and\u003cbr\u003e\ndelivers a knockout performance from start to end, but the film has more gems\u003cbr\u003e\nwhen it comes to performances: Siddharth [excellent], Atul Kulkarni\u003cbr\u003e\n[fantastic], Soha Ali Khan [a complete revelation; efficient], Kunal Kapoor\u003cbr\u003e\n[natural] and Sharman Joshi [powerful].Alice Patten is brilliant and besides\u003cbr\u003e\ndelivering a flawless performance, her style of speaking Hindi is sure to win\u003cbr\u003e\na lot of hearts. Madhavan is likeable. Waheeda Rehman is graceful as ever.\u003cbr\u003e\nBoth Om Puri and Anupam Kher dont get much scope. Kiron Kher is exceptional\u003cbr\u003e\nyet again. Mohan Agashe, Steven Mckintosh, K.K. Raina and Lekh Tandon are\u003cbr\u003e\nadequate.On the whole, RANG DE BASANTI will have its share of advocates and\u003cbr\u003e\nadversaries.
